Affirming our Faith

Introduction to the Affirmation of Faith  ("Faith" by Ann Weems p 55 Searching for Shalom)

Affirmation of Faith

We believe in God who created us and loved us into being.  Who continues to create and who seeks relationship with those he has created.  We believe in Jesus, lover of humankind, who walked the earth that we might know how to live and how to die and how to be raised to eternal life.  We believe in the Holy Spirit as God's presence which dwells within us-which grants us wisdom, strength and comfort.  We believe that we are called to an active witness of God's love and transformation in our lives so that others may see our lives and also be transformed.  Amen.

Preparation for Giving  (Ann Weems, Searching for Shalom)

L:  O Lord, forgive our fears that so stifle our stewardship.  Forgive our giving in and our giving up instead of giving ourselves to Christ's mission of love.  Remind us that our hope is in standing up and risking, in taking our stewardship seriously.  Help us to remember, O Lord, that the stewardship question is not really, How much will we give?  The stewardship question is, How will we spend what we have been given?  We pray it will be faithfully and cheerfully.  Amen.

Prayer of Thanksgiving:

O God, on this Easter Sunday we celebrate your resurrection and our passing from death to life.  We rejoice in your love, in your grace, in your forgiveness.  We pray O God that you will bless these gifts, freely given; that you will use them to build your kingdom on earth; and that you will bless those who give.  For all of this and more, we thank you O God.  Amen.

Remembering Who We Are: Caring for our Community

Prayers of the People

Lord's Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

Prayer Response          He Is Lord       UMH 177

He is Lord, he is Lord!

Jesus Christ is Lord.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. John 15:10-12

Is any one of you in trouble?  He should pray.  Is anyone happy?  Let him sing songs of praise.  James  5:13
Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.  Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.  Romans 12:11-12

Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts those from every nation who fear him and do what is right.  Acts 10:34-35

All the prophets testify about [Jesus] that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."  Acts 10:43
